Höger points out that these works may be compared to the abstract images of the Gugging artist Anton Dobay (1906–1986). Höger notes in the exhibition’s catalog that, in his later works, Schöpke “drew figures and then colored in large areas in colored pencil or crayon on top of them,” sometimes producing “large-format works suggestive of very different moods and displaying painterly qualities,” with expanses of luminous hues that spread out and overlap. Color creeps into his drawings of the 1980s, when he added colored pencils to his use of plain pencils to shade a whale’s big body or lend a more vivid sense of volume to a standing figure’s luxuriant outpouring of hair, hair, hair. Schöpke sometimes drew large animals, including seals and whales, whose bulbous forms he surrounded with concentric lines or shaded areas as if to accentuate them. His simultaneously naked and see-through subjects’ corporeal details include genitalia and, in one drawing of a pregnant woman, the baby she is carrying in her womb, which appears as a kind of cage. These long ribbons of teeth are both comical and monstrous, resembling the ominous-looking bullet belts of soldiers and terrorists. Philipp Schöpke, “Ohne Titel (Untitled)” (1991), pencil and colored pencils on paper, 17.3 x 24.6 inches, private collection (© Art Brut KG, photo courtesy Museum Gugging)īy the 1980s, Schöpke had developed his signature style of depicting human subjects - with mounds of fluffy, wiry hair and broad mouths filled with spiky teeth. He was 35 years old, and it became his home until the end of his life. In and out of psychiatric hospitals, and rejected by his father, a locomotive-factory worker and Nazi sympathizer, Schöpke returned to the psychiatric hospital at Gugging for good in 1956. (The current arts center has nothing to do with such a hospital anymore.) Remarkably, he did another short stint in the military, only to be dismissed again. In time, Schöpke was sent for various stays to the Mental Health and Care Facility at Gugging, the former, now-defunct psychiatric hospital out of which today’s Gugging arts complex evolved. Had he been bullied while serving as a soldier? In early 1941, he was drafted into the German military, only to soon be sent back home to recover from a mysterious head injury. In 1939, after the Nazis’ annexation of Austria into Germany and following the start of World War II, Schöpke, who, as a teenager, had worked as a farmhand, became a mold-making apprentice at a foundry. Regarded as awkward and inept, as a young boy he was teased by other children and chided by his father. The first of his parents’ three children, Schöpke was born in 1921 in a small town in Lower Austria, a large state in the northeastern part of the country. But if you look closely, you’ll see how inventive and sophisticated they are.”įeilacher, who arrived at Gugging in the 1980s and knew the artist well, notes that, after long periods of apparent inactivity or after an outing with his peers from the arts complex’s communal residence, during which he could appear completely detached, Schöpke would suddenly spring into action and enthusiastically recount every detail of a group trip or launch into an energetic art-making session. Organized by Museum Gugging’s director, Johann Feilacher, and Maria Höger, a young, German-born art historian, who, in recent years, has served on the museum’s research and curatorial team, philipp schöpke.! traces the evolution of its subject’s distinctive draftsmanship and presents an analysis of his art’s themes and technical character.ĭuring a recent walk-through of the exhibition, Höger observed, “One of the reasons why Schöpke might have been overshadowed by such Gugging artists as August Walla, with his big, colorful paintings, or Johann Hauser, with his bold images of women, is that, frankly, Schöpke’s works often have been regarded as ‘difficult’ - and to some viewers, even a bit scary. This revealing exhibition may raise it considerably. As much as the term “the artists of Gugging,” alluding to the arts complex’s residence program, which has become synonymous locally with definitive forms of self-taught and marginalized art, even among his Gugging peers, Schöpke has long held a lower profile. On view through March 10, the exhibition probes the development of one of the more intriguing - but still less well-known - bodies of work in the world of art brut. With plenty of expertise, Bryant explains her top pieces for both women and men to shop for and breaks down some of her favorite looks from “Mad Men.” So, how can I recreate ’60s looks? The “Mad Men” series arc spanned the decade between 1960 and ’70, a time when fashion became rapidly less inhibited in form, fit and color. “I watched a ton of movies, especially ‘ North by Northwest.’ Cary Grant’s character was an advertising man, and that film inspired my looks for Don Draper.” “My first point of inspiration was the script, and then I started doing my research,” Bryant said. ©AMC/courtesy Everett Collectioīut Bryant also took cues from the show’s writing to tell stories in fashion. Pictured (from left to right): Aaron Staton, Julie McNiven, Vincent Kartheiser, Alison Brie. Fabric prints became more bold and graphic in the mid-1960s, according to “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant. By the time the mid-60s hit, more architectural graphics and shapes were incorporated into wardrobes, whereas the late ’60s were all about flower power and bell-bottoms. ©AMC/courtesy Everett Collectioīeyond being “the greatest show ever made,” Bryant said the fashion alone from the era holds an important key to changes happening in society, namely the transition from the ’50s to the ’60s, as well as the transition from the ’60s to the ’70s, which were “truly important.”īryant, who is launching her new collection Bryant/Draper with Inherent Clothier, points to the early ’60s when there was a “holdover of 1950s silhouettes” that favored a nipped-waist style. Pictured (from left to right): Vincent Kartheiser, Aaron Staton, John Hamm, Alexa Alemanni, Jessica Paré and Alison Brie. “Every element of this show is impactful and there will never be another show like it.” “Mad Men” costume designer Janie Bryant often dressed actors in skirts and dresses that cinched at the waist - a “holdover” from the 1950s, she said. “’Mad Men’ encapsulates amazing storytelling, vulnerable characters and a great style of costume and production design, as well as hair and makeup,” Bryant said. Most notably, its revamp of ’60s style and culture is unmatched. “Mad Men,” which aired from 2007 to 2015 with 116 Emmy nominations and 16 wins, is unlike any other show. “That decade is really important because the styles are timeless and always look great.” “The 1960s fashion is the iconic American style - and it never goes out of style,” Janie Bryant, who served as the costume designer for all eight seasons of “Mad Men,” told The Post. While fashion trends come and go, this decade in style continues to be revisited - even in a culture wearing Crocs, chunky “dad” shoes, and distressed mom jeans. Stylish dress shoes set the tone for your look. Overall, if your shirt choice works in a professional or office setting, it’ll probably work in cocktail attire-meaning a tailored slim fit and muted tone are preferred. If the dress code allows, formal-looking sweaters and long-sleeve polo shirts can also be the perfect foundation for your cocktail attire ensemble, striking the balance between casual and elegant. Similarly, an Oxford shirt will work like that while keeping things more casual. A classic white dress shirt is a perennial favorite since it’s versatile and timeless and goes well with any suit. Overall, there are quite a few types of shirts suitable for men’s cocktail attire. Brands such as Gucci, Egonlab, and Celine are advocates for this trend.” “Lately the wider leg silhouette on a men’s trouser is the way to go. “The silhouette must have balance and be functional,” suggests celebrity stylist Donté McGuine who has dressed stars like Evan Mock and Vic Mensa on the red carpet. While Ryan Gosling sticks to a tapered leg, we’re seeing more straight and relaxed cuts for a flattering profile. When in doubt, choose a shape that flatters your body type and get it tailored. Gone are the days when all dress pants look the same. Overall, your jackets will set the tone for your cocktail attire, so choose wisely. Peak or shawl lapels are also great, sophisticated details to consider. In addition, your cocktail attire jackets should come in a tailored slim cut. If you do want to show some individuality, show it in patterns like herringbone, check, or plaid. In most cases, you don’t want to get too creative when it comes to jackets in men’s cocktail attire-classic and timeless jackets are the best and safest options. As the cornerstone of cocktail attire for men, your suit jackets or blazers should be well-tailored, single-breasted (unless you’re going for really dressy and elegant) in dark, versatile colors like navy, charcoal, or black. (No pressure.) As Broecker suggests, “You will never feel out of place in a jacket.” While you can always opt for your old standby, this is also a space to lean into seasonal colors and fabrics. “It will never let you down.”īelow, we've consulted with our style experts and done our own hands-on testing on different cocktail attire outfits for men that make dressing up comfortable, and that make transitioning from formal events to a night out effortless.Ī well-tailored suit jacket, blazer, or sports coat is the foundation for all occasions dressing. “Always err on the side of classic leading style,” says Broecker. “Wearing the hues of one base color says, ‘I’m informed, fun, and distinguished.’” “Monochromatic and tonal looks are subtle yet bold statements,” says McGenuine. Should your personal style be more inventive, separates of similar colors, patterns, or textures are appropriate if they look well thought out and put together. If you truly have no idea what to wear (or how to wear it), the old standby navy, gray, or black suit with a white dress shirt and dress shoes is a no-brainer. This makes it ideal for robotic projects, as most robots have either two or four powered wheels. The L298N actually contains two complete H-Bridge circuits, so it is capable of driving a pair of DC motors. When you are done you should have something that looks similar to the illustration shown below. Arduino PID based DC Motor Position Control System IOT based Intelligent Gas. The L298N can handle up to 3 amperes at 35 Volts DC, which is suitable for most hobby motors. There is technically no right or wrong way. You can interchange the connections of your motor. Note that Arduino output pins 9 and 3 are both PWM-enabled.įinally, connect one motor to OUT1 and OUT2 and the other motor to OUT3 and OUT4. Now connect the L293D IC’s Input and Enable pins (ENA, IN1, IN2, IN3, IN4 and ENB) to the six Arduino digital output pins (9, 8, 7, 5, 4 and 3). And make sure your circuit and Arduino share a common ground. Connect the VSS (Vcc1) pin to the 5V output on the Arduino. Next, we need to supply 5V to the logic circuitry of the L293D. It can control both the speed and the spinning. Most DC-to-AC converters (power inverters), most AC/AC converters, the DC-to-DC pushpull converter, isola. Therefore, we will connect the external 5V power supply to the VS (Vcc2) pin. The easiest and inexpensive way to control DC motors is to interface the L293D Motor Driver IC with the Arduino. In our experiment we are using DC gearbox motors (also known as ‘TT’ motors) commonly found in two-wheel-drive robots. Let’s start by connecting the power supply to the motors. Now that we know everything about the IC, we can start connecting it to our Arduino! Wiring a L293D Motor Driver IC to an Arduino But, with Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), you can actually control the speed of the motors. Pulling these pins HIGH will cause the motors to spin, while pulling it LOW will stop them. The speed control pins ENA and ENB are used to turn on/off the motors and control its speed. The image below shows PWM technique with different duty cycles and average voltages. 100K ohm potentiometer is connected to the analog input pin A0 of the Arduino UNO and the DC motor is connected to the 12 th pin of the Arduino (which is the PWM pin). The higher the duty cycle, the higher the average voltage applied to the DC motor (resulting in higher speed) and the shorter the duty cycle, the lower the average voltage applied to the DC motor (resulting in lower speed). In this circuit, for controlling the speed of DC motor, we use a 100K ohm potentiometer to change the duty cycle of the PWM signal. The average voltage is proportional to the width of the pulses known as the Duty Cycle. so we are using the pin number 9 (D9) of the arduino board in this project. Because we are going to control the speed of the motor using the PWM pheripheral. It means that the rotation of the motor depends on the force generated by the magnetic. Step 1: Gather the Necessary Components to Do Our Project. PWM is a technique where the average value of the input voltage is adjusted by sending a series of ON-OFF pulses. The principle of the DC motors is based on Electromagnetic Induction. A common technique to do this is to use PWM (Pulse Width Modulation). The speed of a DC motor can be controlled by changing its input voltage.
So Artemia, to provide these partners-in-digestion with the ideal living conditions, is forced to live in water that’s saltier than it would naturally prefer, and is effectively barred from mildly salty places. And here’s the rub: the bacteria like salt. Without them, the shrimp wouldn’t be able to survive on their usual meals. These bacteria help to break down the carbohydrates in the algae, as well as detoxifying the many poisons in those mouthfuls. Their usual preference for high-salt water only exists when they eat algae and carry microbes. Likewise, when she fed them a diet of yeast instead of their usual meals of algae, they also did better with less salt. When Nougué raised Artemia larvae in sterile cultures, so they grew up without their usual coterie of microbes, these germ-free shrimp did better in low-salt water. Nougué discovered that Artemia’s gut microbes are behind this weird paradox. Bizarre! Surely, it should be the other way round? Below that threshold, they’re less likely to survive. At more than 40 grams of salt per litre, they’re fine. So you’d expect that Artemia does best in mildly salty water. The saltier the water, the harder they have to work and the more energy they burn. They cope with salt by efficiently pumping it out of their own bloodstreams. As their name suggests, they live in salty water, but they evolved from freshwater ancestors. These little creatures are more formally known as brine shrimp, or Artemia. Odrade Nougué and Thomas Lenormand from the University of Montpellier have found a great example of such constraints in an animal that will be familiar to anyone who grew up in the 70s and 80s: the sea monkey. Microbes can bar animals from valuable opportunities, restrict their options, and place burdens upon them-all without causing infections or disease. But symbiosis also comes with costs and constraints. These examples inform the common view that symbioses (partnerships) between animals and microbes lead to mutual benefit and expanding opportunities. By providing a source of energy that isn’t tied to sunlight, bacteria allowed worms, clams, and hundreds of other creatures to colonise the abyssal oceans, and lose their mouths and guts in the process. By breaking down the tough and typically indigestible carbohydrates in plant matter, bacteria allowed mammals to become extreme grazers and gave rise to the thundering herds of Africa’s plains. By providing nutrients that are missing from the sap of plants, bacteria have allowed bugs to subsist on a diet of nothing else, turning them into the bane of greenery and greenhouses worldwide. Time and again, microbes have opened doors for animals, allowing them to exploit niches that would have otherwise been denied to them by their basic animal-ness. It will keep for up to 3 days in the fridge.
